What is the Valorant Esports tournament system and circuit like? What is VCT and VCL?

In Valorant esports, there are currently 2 circuit tournament systems that are played simultaneously, namely VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) and VALORANT Challengers (VCL).

VCT Circuit

2023 VCT schedule

For VCT, this is a circuit for teams that are said to be Tier-1 or a circuit for partnership or semi-franchise teams only. In contrast to franchise systems such as MPL or LoL, the VCT system has a promotion system, but no relegation for selected teams.

Riot Games has selected 30 teams from around the world to play on the VCT circuit. And the VCT League itself is divided into 3 regions, America, EMEA and Asia Pacific. Each league has 10 teams.

On the VCT circuitthe team plays to qualify to Championsor its world championship (same as M Series or PMGC).

So the teams are playing in their respective leagues to get into Masters to collect points to get into Champions. Masters is a major tournament like Major Bali 2023 for DotA 2.

Not only that, all teams from each league must move and play in one location offline. So for teams in Asia Pacific, 10 teams are moving to Seoul South Korea. For America in Los Angeles, United States of America and EMEA in Berlin, Germany.

2023 is a little different because it is the first year for this VCT circuit. for years 2024 and beyond, looks like there will be 2 Masters and 2 league seasons running. Like MPL where there are 2 league seasons per year. In the middle of the season there is an international tournament Masters or similar like MSC on MLBB.

Champions 2023 Team So Far

In 2023, because there is only 1 Masters, the teams that qualify for the masters automatically qualify for the 2023 Champions. For EMEA which has 4 teams, the top 3 teams from Tokyo Masters 2023 will enter the 2023 Champions.

For 7 teams in each league there is still a chance to play in the 2023 Champions through LCQ or Last Chance Qualifier. 7 teams play for 1 slot in Champions 2023 which is in Los Angeles, United States of America.

Total 16 teams will play in Champions 2023 later (4 Pacific, 4 Americas, 4 EMEA, 3 China, 1 additional slot for the region of the team that won the Masters).

So for those asking, Rex Regum Qeon (RRQ) when do you play? RRQ only plays on the VCT or VCT Pacific League circuit, because they were hand-picked by Riot. Where do BOOM Esports, AE and BTR play? They play under the name VCL which will be explained below.

VCT Promotion VCL

After 2 years what happened? This team had to return to playing in regional leagues to be promoted back to VCT.

Every year, VCT will add 1 team for each league. So there will be 1 new team every year in the Pacific league, in the American league and in the EMEA league. But there are only a maximum of 14 teams playing in their respective leagues.
