Mindfreak About Lock Paper Rex Could Be More Successful Than Other Asian VCT Teams At The Tokyo Masters 2023!
The VCT Masters Tokyo 2023 has just finished and FNATIC has emerged as the champion. The Tokyo Masters will be the only international major tournament in 2023 for teams from the franchise league.
3 Asia Pacific teams qualified for the 2023 Tokyo Masters but only 1 team really shined. That team is the Paper Rex team.
The other 2 teams are the DRX team and also the T1 team. T1 was the first Asian team to fall in the group stage and DRX was able to enter the playoffs but they couldn’t win even one map in the playoffs.
One of the most disappointing is the DRX team, which despite being in the top 4 in VCT LOCK//IN Brazil in March but their performance began to decline at the end of the VCT Pacific League season yesterday.
Apart from these 2 teams, Paper Rex is the only Asian team that has surprised and amazed the world of Valorant esports. A top 3 finish at the Tokyo Masters with a stand-in is a near impossibility.
Asking this in the post match interview, Mindfreak gave his opinion on why Paper Rex was able to succeed even though playing with stand-ins and APAC teams like T1 and DRX was not optimal.
According to this player from Indonesia, the gameplay of PRX is indeed different from the others. There are not or not many who play like them and may make other teams more overwhelmed against them.
According to him, T1 and DRX are more like European playstyles and maybe easier to counter.
“Maybe the playstyle, because the playstyle for T1 and DRX is more towards Europe, right? Meanwhile, our playstyle is our own playstyle. So it’s like when they play against Europe or NA, it’s easy to read maybe. But according to me, playstyle is like that” said the controller.
PRX had to play without MVP Pacific League something and replace it with cgrs who only played once in the league.

Even so, they were able to enter the top 3 of the Tokyo 2023 Masters, beating teams like DRX, EDG and also NRG. All of their players really stepped up without something, including CGRS who did some important clutch play.
But their steps had to stop in the lower finals against Evil Geniuses. Even though they had won 2-1, they had to lose 2-3. Indeed, with stand-ins, their map pool is a little lacking.
Playing with a stand-in is not easy at all, especially since they only have 10 days to practice.
Indeed, Paper Rex has the most unique gameplay in the entire Valorant scene. And many teams may want to try their style but fail to be as successful as they are.
Next Paper Rex will prepare for VCT Champions 2023 in Los Angeles, United States of America in August.
