Representing local game developers, Ivan Chen, CEO of Anantarupa Studios said that the potential for the game market in Indonesia is actually very large.

It is estimated that by attracting a third of Indonesia’s population to become players, the national game market will be able to earn US$1.74 billion – equivalent to Rp27 trillion – in 2020, and this figure is projected to continue to grow to Rp35 trillion this year. Meanwhile, the esports industry itself is estimated to be worth US$1.1 billion in 2020.

“On the other hand, 99.6% of revenue from the game industry in Indonesia as a whole is still dominated by international products. We see this as a challenge as well as a golden opportunity for local players.”

“As a local game developer with special attention to esports growth, Anantarupa Studios appreciates the initiative and consistent support shown by PB ESI, this time through the introduction of our game called Lokapala to national and international audiences at Trade Expo Indonesia 2022,” said Ivan.

“In addition to building closer synergies with the government and the entire esports ecosystem under PB ESI, we are also ready to develop and collaborate on our intellectual property (IP) with various industrial sectors.”

“Hopefully, the game industry which has proven to be resilient to the economic crisis can become one of the spearheads of recovery and even tremendous economic growth in the future, especially in building a strong, sustainable, and competitive national digital economy in the global arena,” he continued.

Ricky Setiawan, Head of Athlete, Achievement & IT Division of PB ESI also underlined the seriousness of PB ESI to encourage the contribution of local players to the country’s esports industry.

It is hoped that the emergence of creators such as Anantarupa Studios and other local game developers can spur more national talents to participate in their work and become superiors both in the national and international arenas.

“Under the leadership of General Chair Budi Gunawan and Deputy General Chair Bambang Sunarwibowo, PB ESI’s commitment leads to a necessity that esports is not only a competitive, educational sport, but also an industry that creates significant economic value for the surrounding ecosystem.”

“For this reason, PB ESI always encourages young Indonesians to take part in developing the esports industry through their potential, achievements and creations,” Ricky said.

“PB ESI continues to encourage the existence of local games in the realm of national and international competition with the hope that we will no longer only be an importing country, but also produce games created by the nation’s children that are colored by Indonesian identity to the world.”

“Together, let’s increase the contribution of the digital sector and the creative economy to the national economy, and make Indonesia’s esports name good on the world stage.” Ricky added,

Carrying the genre multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) as one of the most popular categories in esports competition, Lokapala is the first Indonesian MOBA game produced by Anantarupa Studios. Various characters, stories, and aspects of the game are inspired by historical stories and legends from the original archipelago.
