Today, Ubisoft and Riot Games announced a research project “Zero Harm in Comms”, a technology partnership to expand the reach of artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions to prevent offensive interactions between players. This research initiative aims to create a shared database across industries and a labeling ecosystem that collects in-game data, which will further train AI-based preventive moderation tools to detect and respond to disruptive behavior.
As active members of the Fair Play Alliance, Ubisoft and Riot Games firmly believe that creating safe and meaningful gaming experiences can only be achieved through collective action and knowledge sharing. This initiative is a continuation of the two companies’ larger journey towards creating gaming structures that encourage more enjoyable social experiences and move away from offensive interactions.
“Disruptive player behavior is an issue that we take very seriously but is also very difficult to address. At Ubisoft, we’re constantly working on concrete steps to ensure a safe and enjoyable gaming experience. But we believe that by collaborating as an industry, we will be able to address these issues more effectively.” said Yves Jacquier, Executive Director, Ubisoft La Forge. “As the designers of this ecosystem with direct access to the community, we are exploring ways to better prevent toxic behavior in games through this technology partnership with Riot Games.”
Through the “Zero Harm in Comms” research project, Ubisoft and Riot Games explore how to lay the technological foundation for future industry collaboration and create a framework that guarantees the ethics and privacy of this initiative. Thanks to Riot Games’ highly competitive games and Ubisoft’s diverse portfolio, the resulting database will cover all player types and in-game behavior to better train the two companies’ AI systems.
“Disruptive behavior is not a game-specific problem – every company with an online social platform is working to address the challenge. That’s why we’re committed to working with industry partners like Ubisoft, who believe in creating safe communities and fostering positive experiences in the online space.” said Wesley Kerr, Head of Technology Research at Riot Games. “This project is just an example of the broader commitment and work we are doing at Riot to develop systems that create healthy, safe and inclusive interactions in our games.”
The “Zero Harm in Comms” research project, which is still in its early stages, is the first step in an ambitious cross-industry project aimed at benefiting the entire community of players in the future. As part of the first research exploration, Ubisoft and Riot are committed to sharing the lessons learned from this early phase of the experiment with the entire industry over the next year, regardless of the outcome.
